Septic tank cleaning - At least once every two years Français
Defective or inadequate usage of septic tanks may be very harmful to the environment.

The following signs indicate your septic tank in not operating properly: Glowing green coloured grass clumps, old water stains or soft and spongy ground in some spots on your lawn,  foul sewer stench in your basement.

Here are a few precautionary measures:

·  Never dispose of antibiotics or household chemical products in your toilet or bathroom sink to avoid destroying the bacterial flora of your septic tank;
·  Spread your laundry over several days to avoid overloading your tank;
·  Make sure you know where the important elements of your septic tank are located and prevent heavy vehicles from driving over them;
·  Do not plant trees or bushes near the septic tank drains as their roots could block them;
·  Have your septic tank inspected every year and have the sludge and foam removed every second year;
·  The use of a food disposal system (garborator) prevents your septic tank from operating correctly and considerably reduces the life expectancy of the purifying element (weeping field).

Septic installation and tanks (By-law)

SAINT-LAZARE (Québec), April 26, 2011

We wish to remind you that in accordance with the regulation concerning waste water disposal systems for isolated dwellings, Q-2, r.8 (art. 13) and municipal by-law no 542, your septic tank must be emptied at least once every two (2) years.

Also, according to article 5 of the same by-law, once your tank has been emptied, you are obliged to submit a copy of your septic tank cleaning invoice to the Urban planning and environment services before December 31, 2011.

Furthermore, it is possible to have your tank inspected at the cost of $55 by completing the form available on the town’s website (ville.saint-lazare.qc.ca/septic) and returning it with your cheque made out to “Ville de Saint-Lazare” before October 31, 2011, at 1967 chemin Sainte-Angélique, Saint-Lazare (Québec) J7T 0E2. This inspection will determine the actual level of sediment and scum in the tank, and accordingly, determine whether or not it is necessary to have it emptied.

We invite you to visit our website at ville.saint-lazare.qc.ca/subscription and to subscribe to our e-mail distribution to receive Town notices and reminders.
