Saint-Lazare (Québec), June 2nd, 2008.
The Coop de solidarité Bébé Écolo is presently recruiting members for
its disposable diapers recycling project. Mothers, mothers-to-be,
retirement home administrators, environmental-friendly people, all can
join this Co-op!
Did you know? A baby will use the equivalent of a ton of disposable
diapers? It takes more than 100 years to break down disposable diapers?
The province of Quebec produces more than 100 000 tons of disposable
diapers per year? In institutions, disposable diapers contribute to the
proliferation of microorganisms, bacteria and odours?
It is quite easy to do your part. Once the Co-op is up and running, you
will have to buy diapers from them. Upon receiving new diapers, you will
return used diapers to the Co-op in a sealed bag. These used diapers
will be brought to the recycling centre where they will be recycled by
pyrolysis. This technology, already being used for recycling tires, will
break down the diapers into useable derivatives such as biogases which,
when harnessed, produce energy.
The Coop de solidarité Bébé Écolo was set up on July 7, 2007 with the
support of the Coopérative de dévelopement regional de Montréal-Laval.
Its objective is to sell disposable diapers, deliver them, and collect
used diapers for recycling. To obtain more information or to join the
Co-op, please contact Pierre Bissonnette at 450-629-0748 or by email at
