Littering is like speeding – each one of us is responsible for reducing both! Français
SAINT-LAZARE (Québec) – December 10, 2007

Littering is like speeding each one of us is responsible for reducing both!

The Town of Saint-Lazare reminds all of its citizens that Newsstands and supermailboxes are central and strategic locations where the mailman delivers your daily mail. Whether you agree or not with these Canada Post mail distribution methods, there are also a means for you to get your local newspapers, Publisac and even to communicate with others using the bulletin boards available in certain places.

In theory, the majority of people who stop at a mail kiosk live in the district serviced by that kiosk. So, how come so many citizens lack respect for their neighbors? Far too often, the Town receives complaints concerning messy newsstands and the state their left in by those who visit them. Several suggestions were brought by these citizens like:

1) Banishing the distribution of the Publisac, flyers and local newspapers. Yet, according to surveys, 77 % of the population enjoys getting and reading this info.
2) Adding trash cans. Yet, most of our residents are environmentally-friendly and would rather recycle printed material.
3)

Adding chained-up recycling bins. Yet all of our residents either have a 240 or 360-litre recycling bin at home. And although, in theory, the community recycling bin is an attractive idea, in practice it really isn’t because of the risk of vandalism (breakage, fire, theft) like with the garbage cans. The process would also require more manpower, money and coordination between the MRC and the Town.

So why make it complicated when we can keep it simple! Why not just simply take your mail home with you and put it in your recycling bin? It’s easy and cheap! Cleanliness and pride go together! Lead by example!
