On the road

Individuals have the right to ride their horses on the road, in accordance with the Road Safety Rules for Horse Riders. Motorists must slow down when they are passing a horse and rider.

On a trail

Since January 1, 2021, anyone who wishes to ride a horse on a public horse trail in Saint-Lazare must be a member of Club équestre Les Forestiers Inc., whether they are residents of Saint-Lazare or not. These individuals must be ready to show proof of membership to anyone who can enforce the by-law, most notably a patrol officer. Licence

All dogs within the municipality must have a licence. This provision does not apply to dogs kept in kennels or to puppies kept with their mother until the age of six (6) months.

The licence:

Is permanent, which means that it is valid for the entire life of the dog
Is available at a cost of $25
Can be obtained:
- In person at the City Hall reception desk (1960 Chemin Sainte-Angélique)
- By printing and filling out the form and submitting it by mail (or by placing it in the mailbox located outside City Hall) accompanied by a cheque made out to the order of “Ville de Saint-Lazare.” The licence is then sent to the owner by mail.

Loss and deterioration:

In the event of the loss or deterioration of the permanent licence, you can obtain a replacement at City Hall at a cost of $10, upon representation of the original receipt.

Purpose:

The licence enables the City, the animal controller or residents who find a lost dog to quickly identify it and reunite the animal with its owner.
It is also required by a provincial law that requires cities and towns to be able to identify dogs in this manner.

Breeds

The City regulates dangerous dogs without prohibiting any particular breed.

The provincial regulation requires that dogs be kept on leash at all times when outside of a private property.

This leash must measure 1.85 metres or less.
If a dog weighs 20 kg or more, it must also wear a halter or harness.
Failing to respect this regulation may result in a fine between $500 to $1,500.
