Ville de Saint-Lazare: Services or information provided by the Town
Many sessions throughout the region - Backyard composting training sessions
Saint-Lazare (Québec), March 21 2011
Again this year, la MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges has mandated the
non-profit organization Terres en Ville to offer Vaudreuil-Soulanges
residents several French backyard composting training sessions and one (1) English composting session to promote the recovery of domestic
organic residues. During each session, a domestic backyard composter
will be drawn, giving each participant a chance to win. Participants will also be eligible for a rebate on the purchase of a domestic composter.
Furthermore, Saint-Lazare residents
will also be eligible to win one of 50 backyard domestic composters the
Town will draw in the fall of 2011.
Sessions are offered free of charge to all Vaudreuil-Soulanges
residents. It is not necessary to register to participate. Let us remind
you that organic residues represent fifty nine percent (59 %) of
domestic wastes sent to landfills. Composting is therefore a very simple
gesture to reduce the volume of garbage sent to landfills and produce
useful fertilizing compost.
In Saint-Lazare, the session will be held: In French
on Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Centre (1301 Rue du Bois).
Residents wishing to participle to an English training session can do so: In English
on Wednesday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m at the Stephen Shaar Community centre (394 Main Street).
If you cannot make it to Saint-Lazare’s session or Hudson’s you may attend one of the following FRENCH only sessions:

Reducing water overconsumption and waste View our short webcast
Every drop counts
Count the number of times you turn on a tap each day, from brushing your
teeth to washing your car to making your evening cup of cocoa. Now
multiply that amount by the number of members in your family. That adds
up to a lot of water, about 335 litres of water each day per person. On
a per capita basis, Canadians are the second highest water consumers in the world.
Demand for water is on the rise, from increased populations,
manufacturing, irrigation and other manmade uses. Meantime pollution,
declining water tables and prolonged drought conditions are shrinking
the usable supply.
Using less water is essential not only to ensure a steady supply of
water, but also to lower water and heating bills associated with pumping
water to our homes and warming it for various household uses. Shutting
off water when it’s not being used and using less water to do the same
job are two simple ways you can preserve this precious resource, before
it literally goes down the drain.
Go with the low-flow
Installing a low-flow shower head will be a very smart addition to your
water conservation plans. Available at most home building and supply
stores, these fixtures use about half of the water of a conventional
shower head. Buy a model with a shut-off button that allows you to
interrupt the flow while you lather up or shampoo.
A better flush
Environ About 65% of indoor home water use occurs in our bathrooms, and
toilets are the single greatest water users.
Upgrading your toilet can lead to significant water savings that you can
bank on over the life of the purchase. Replacing an 18-litre-per-flush
toilet with an ultra-low-volume six-litre flush model represents
a 66% savings in water flushed and will cut indoor water use by about 30%.
The dual-flush toilet takes water-efficiency one step further by using 6 litres of water to flush solid waste but only three litres to flush liquid waste.
Stop the leaks
Leaky fixtures waste a huge amount of water. A hot water faucet that leaks one drip per second will waste 9,000 litres per year, while a toilet that runs after flushing can waste up to 200,000 litres of water in a year.
Fix leaking faucets as soon as possible. To find out if your toilet is leaking, put two or three drops of food colouring in the tank at the back of the toilet. Wait a few minutes. If the colour shows up in the bowl, there's a leak.
If your toilet leaks, make sure that the flapper valve inside the tank is sitting properly in the valve seat. Also check that the flush valve lift wires are not bent or misaligned and that the valve seat is not corroded. All of these can be fixed easily and inexpensively. If, however, the leak is around the base of the toilet where it sits on the floor, call a professional.
More Water Conservation Tips
Take quick showers instead of baths; you’ll use up to 50% less hot water.
When washing or shaving, partially fill the sink and use that water rather than running the tap continuously.
Turn the water off while you are brushing your teeth.

The preservation of water begins at home with the awareness of our consumer habits.
Preserving water does not mean reducing our quality of life by depriving ourselves of water.
Just reducing the waste of water makes a big difference!

Autumn leaves
Spring leaf collection on May 7 and 21st
SAINT-LAZARE (Québec), May 2rd, 2011.
Ville de Saint-Lazare has scheduled two leaf and green residue (from the garden) collections which will take place on Saturday May 7 and Saturday May 21, 2011.
As is the case for the fall leaf collection, only leaves and green residues placed in COMPOSTABLE PAPER BAGSwill be picked up.
Ville de Saint-Lazare will not distribute any paper bag;
There is no limit on the number of bags;
The bags must be placed at the curb before 7 a.m.;
The bags must be closed and protected from the weather;
Paper bags are available at most renovation centres and hardware stores including Saint-Lazare’sHome Hardware,1704-B Chemin Sainte-Angélique.
110-litre (35 gallons) paper bags must be used (size: 16 " x 12 " x 35 ")
Branches are not accepted. The collections will take place in the zones identified in orange on the map in order to include all homes located outside the agricultural (green) zones.
www.mrcvs.ca/110/pdf/depliant_2010.PDF).
Paper bags have many advantages: they are biodegradable and compostable. The leaves and green residue collected will be composted by the CRM.
For more information, contact Lyne Mousseau, project manager (environment) at 450 424-8000, extension 248,or lmousseau@ville.saint-lazare.qc.ca.
Autumn leaf collection
The Town of Saint-Lazare will distribute free paper bags for the leaf pickup.
First distribution Saturday, September 24, 2011
From 8:30 a.m to 2:30 p.m. Community Centre
(1301 Rue du Bois)
Second distribution Wednesday, October 19, 2011
From 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Community Centre
(1301 Rue du Bois)
So successful in previous collections, the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges decided to hold another leaf pickup this fall. Only residential units (identified in beige on the map) will be serviced for this collection. In Saint-Lazare this represents all residences outside of the green agricultural zone. View the MRC PDF www.mrcvs.ca/110/pdf/depliant_2010.PDF
Residents who wish to participate to this collection must use biodegradable paper bags of 110 litres (35 gallons)or of a 16" x 12" x 35" dimension. There are no limits of quantity.
These bags are also available at our local hardware dealers and supermarkets. Each paper bag costs on average $0.60 or less.
The use of paper bags contains numerous advantages, on one hand, they are biodegradable, compostable, are resistant to humidity, do not collapse and, on the other hand, the rate of contamination is far less when leaves are collected in paper bags. Furthermore, this bulk packaging, unlike plastic bags, is cheaper in terms of handling cost and much better for the environment.
Leaves will be recycled at one of our local farmers and also at a local nursery. Recycling with a regional partner is a major advantage from an environmental point of view because the MRC has the opportunity to value its leaves on its territory instead of transporting them outside.
