Please note : This is only a summary of the by-law. For all the details, please consult By-law 805 (in French only).

Smoke detectors
Take note the municipal By-Law requires a building owner to install and maintain fire alarms on every floor of an inhabited building, including basement. In all new residential buildings, smoke detectors must be permanently connected to an electrical circuit and also be fitted with A BATTERY as a back-up source of electricity during power outages. In addition, all smoke detectors must be continuously maintained in working order. They must be replaced if defective or if they have been in use for MORE THAN 10 YEARS from the date of manufacture.
