Verification program : smoke detectors

Moving soon? Don’t leave behind your concern for safety! Français
It’s moving season. The Ministry of Public Security reminds those of you who will be moving soon to make sure your new dwelling is safe by checking all smoke detectors and replacing the batteries if needed.

Here’s how to ensure that your smoke detector is in working order:
· Check the manufacturing date on the casing. If your smoke detector is over 10 years old, ask your landlord for a new one. That’s his responsibility! But you are the one responsible for ensuring that it is kept in working order.
· Always buy high quality batteries.
· If there is no smoke detector, ask your landlord to provide one a.s.a.p..

Here are other safety precautions that should not be taken only on moving day:
· Prepare an evacuation plan. Do it with the whole family and have regular drills. Turn it into a game for your kids. This will help prevent panic and bold behaviour should a fire break out.
· Familiarize yourself with the evacuation procedure established by the building’s owner.
· Do not accumulate useless boxes or objects in your dwelling, on the balcony or alongside the building. This could attract pyromaniacs or prevent you from safely evacuating the building.
· Remember to store dangerous products such as propane gas or paint in a safe place outside the building.
· Buy a portable extinguisher, put it in an easily accessible place and, most importantly, learn how to use it.
· If you own a barbecue, leave it outside, far enough from the windows and outside walls.

A smoke detector in working order could have prevented many of the deaths and severe injuries caused by a fire. A smoke detector allows occupants to quickly exit a burning building before smoke starts to spread. It saves lives, especially when a fire breaks out in the night. This is why most municipalities have a by-law making their installation mandatory.
