World Environment Day, a Call to Action!
Celebrated every year on June 5, World Environment Day is a key moment for raising public awareness of the environmental challenges faced by our planet. This day is an opportunity to highlight crucial issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
Beyond raising awareness, this event encourages us to adopt eco-responsible gestures on a daily basis. Whether by reducing our energy consumption, favoring sustainable transport or making more environmentally-friendly consumer choices, our individual actions have a significant collective impact.
World Environment Day reminds us that protecting our planet is everyone's business. Together, we can meet these challenges and build a more sustainable future for generations to come.
Ville de Saint-Lazare resolutely committed to a greener future
Our beautiful city does not skimp in terms of means and processes to do its part. The Service de l'environnement is fully dedicated to the cause and shares with you below a few key elements from which you can draw inspiration this year, or from which you can obtain more information.
Ecological landscaping contest
The Comité consultatif sur l'environnement and Ville de Saint-Lazare warmly invite you to take part in the second edition of the Ecological landscaping contest. This year's theme is "Jardin des pollinisateurs".
The aim of the contest is to encourage residents to create ecological landscapes that are both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly. For full details, visit the contest web page.
Saint-Lazare, “gold” monarque-friendly city
Monarch butterflies are pollinators, enabling plants to reproduce and species to survive. Yet its populaiton has fallen by 90% in 20 years! Among the causes of this decline are the loss of natural habitat, agricultural pesticides, the expansion of cultivated land and the increasing scarcity of milkweed, the caterpillars' only food plant and egg-laying site.
For its efforts to preserve the monarch butterfly, Ville de Saint-Lazare has been awarded GOLD status by the David Suzuki Foundation. To find out more, visit our website and see how you too can get involved.
Waste collection refund
The more we recycle, the more we compost, the more we reduce at source, the more the rebate in taxpayers' coffers increases! Since 2007, Lazarois residents have benefited from the program for the redistribution to municipalities of fees for the disposal of residual materials. For the year 2023, we have obtained the amount of $405,713.97. In terms of tonnage, we produced approximately 195 kg/person/year of waste sent to landfill, down from 261 kg/person/year of waste for 2022. Let's keep up the good work!
The Green Squad is back
From May to August, the Green Squad will be touring our beautiful city door-to-door, informing and educating residents about environmental issues and eco-responsible practices. To learn all about their mission and take a look at their tools, visit their page here.
Watch out for ticks and Lyme disease
Climate change is a major reason for the appearance and proliferation of black-legged ticks in Quebec, and they are here to stay. You don't have to completely destroy your green spaces to avoid them, as ticks also live in short grass. Find out more about ticks, by visiting the Institut national de santé publique du Québec page.
